The Perfect Nutrition Plan for Cancer

Stay on track and feel your best

Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

Staying on a healthy nutrition plan during cancer treatment may be extremely difficult due to the side effects of treatment: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, metal mouth, etc.

When I first started chemo I had the weirdest cravings for McDonald’s, ice cream, SUGAR, or sometimes the thought of food repulsed me.

Before starting treatment I was extremely healthy and was very mindful of the things I put in my body. I stayed away from processed foods, sugar, gluten, fast food and really only ate anti-inflammatory whole foods.

I had high hopes of maintaining this same routine during treatment but sticking to this plan 100% was pretty difficult…until I came up with the following routine:

During treatment weeks, I allowed myself to eat whatever I could. Most weeks this looked like graham crackers, toast with butter, fast food, noodles, the list goes on. I focused on what I could eat and not what I couldn’t eat.

The weeks between treatment when I was feeling better is when I would focus on getting in nutrients, adding in vegetables and protein and sticking to my workout routine.

If I could focus on nutrition when I felt good, then that was in my control. This was a game changer for me and allowed me to feel strong and healthy between chemo rounds.

Here is an example meal plan for the day during off weeks:

Breakfast: Gluten free toast w/ avocado, 1-2 eggs, side of berries/fruit

Lunch: Chicken and rice bowl with veggies

Dinner: Tacos (turkey, shrimp or chicken) with a side salad or more veggies

Snacks: Protein shake or protein yogurt bowl

Doing what you can and focusing on what you can add and not what you need to take away will help you feel more balanced and less restricted during treatment. The more you try to adhere to a healthy routine, the better you will feel.

If you are starting treatment, in treatment, or recently finished treatment and are looking for help creating a nutrition plan or just need someone to hold you accountable, I offer nutrition coaching. If you are looking to ramp up your fitness routine but need someone who understands your body and limitations post-cancer, I also offer virtual personal training.
